Jaguar E-Type Historic Racing

The E-Type has raced on in historic racing: at the Goodwood Revival, where it has won the RAC TT Celebration more often than any other model, in E-Type-only grids, and in the Jaguar Classic Challenge.

At the Silverstone Classic in July 2011, the E-Type's 50th year, 52 E-Types started one race. It was a record grid for the E-Type Challenge, and Motor Sport wondered where they had all come from.

Clearly business has been booming for those who can turn a common or garden E into a whizz-bang lightweight racer but it does beg the question of what all these newly-created race cars are going to do next year?

Motor Sport, October 2011

The answer was that they kept racing, and in historic racing the E-Type has gone on winning, above all at the Goodwood Revival. Many of the cars that race today were built up from road cars, and a few are the original racers. The period story is on the racing page.source 1source 2source 3source 4

The RAC TT Celebration

The Goodwood Revival's RAC TT Celebration has been run every year since 1998, and in its 29 runnings to 2026 an E-Type has won it 13 times, more than any other model; the Cobras, AC and Shelby, have won it nine times.

The Kinrara and Stirling Moss Memorial Trophies

The Kinrara Trophy was added to the Revival in 2016, a race for closed GT cars from before 1963. Motor Sport described it in 2018 as "conceived as a race for early original cars that haven't been developed as intensively as those that do battle in the TT". An E-Type won it in 2017, driven by Keen and Minshaw. In 2020 it was renamed the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy, and E-Types won its first two runnings, both with Stanley and Cottingham: at Goodwood's SpeedWeek in October 2020, when the top five in qualifying were all E-Types, and at the 2021 Revival. In 2022 a Cobra won, the first win under the Moss name not taken by an E-Type.source 9source 10source 11

E-Type-only racing

The E-Type Challenge, a series for E-Types alone, had its record grid of 52 at the 2011 Silverstone Classic, where Jon Minshaw won both races. The same weekend 767 road-going E-Types made a parade lap that set a Guinness World Record, and Motor Sport reported 1,000 of them at the circuit. In 2012 the series ran a second season, at Donington Park, Dijon, the Nürburgring and Oulton Park, and aimed for 58 cars at Silverstone. In 2021, for the 60th anniversary, The Classic at Silverstone ran a 60th Anniversary E-Type Challenge race.source 3source 1source 4source 12

The Jaguar Classic Challenge

Jaguar's own series, the Jaguar Classic Challenge, was not for E-Types alone: in 2016–17 it was for Jaguars built before 1966, from C-types and D-types to saloons (sedans). At the Le Mans Classic in July 2016 Julian Thomas won the series' race from a record grid of 65 Jaguars, in a 1962 E-Type in low-drag form, and one of the 2015 continuation Lightweights qualified 5th. Its 2017 season was a five-race series, from Donington in April to the Spa Six Hours in September, and Graeme and James Dodd won at Brands Hatch in an E-Type.source 13source 14source 15

Other historic races

E-Types race wherever the cars of the early 1960s do. At the Silverstone Classic in 2014 the Cottingham brothers' E-Type lost a duel with a Ferrari 250 GT in the race for GT cars built before 1963, and in 2015 Martin O'Connell won the International Trophy for Classic GT Cars in an E-Type from 25th on a grid drawn by lot. The rivals today are the old ones: the Cobras, the Ferrari 250 GT SWBs and GTOs, the Aston Martin DB4 GTs.

Some of the original cars still run. Sir Gawaine Baillie's 1961 car, GB 8488, raced in the 2018 Kinrara Trophy and was 16th, and Peter Lindner's restored Lightweight reappeared in July 2011 at the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power.source 16source 17source 18source 19source 10
