Jaguar E-Type Books and Sources

The magazines, archives, registers, results tables and releases behind every page of this site, each with its address and a label for the kind of source it is.

The E-Type's paper trail begins in April 1961, with Motor Sport's first description of the new car, and runs to May 1975, when the same magazine wrote its farewell. From there the sources behind this site run through road tests, race reports and results to the Jaguar Heritage Trust's records, the registers kept by enthusiasts and the histories written since. Every source the 57 pages cite, some 260 of them, is in the list below, once, with its address printed as plain text; each page also ends with a list of the sources it uses.source 1source 2

How the sources are graded

The label beside each source in the list grades the kind of source it is, not every line in it. Primary sources were made at the time, by the maker or by people who were there: Jaguar's brochures and releases, the period road tests and race reports, the honours lists of the London Gazette, and the Heritage Trust's records of the cars in its collection. The label also marks the makers', suppliers' and official bodies' own pages, read for what they say of themselves. Reference sources are later work done with care: the clubs' guides and registers, the historians' books and articles, and later interviews and recollections by people who were there, which are memories, not records. Database sources, racingsportscars' results above all, are read one entry at a time.

Unchecked sources are leads, such as a dealer's page or a search record. A page uses one only beside a stronger source, or by naming it in the sentence.source 3source 4source 5source 6source 7

Magazines of the time

Motor Sport's online archive is the backbone of the period record. Bill Boddy's description of the new 3.8 in April 1961, the road tests of the 4.2 in 1965 and of the V12 in 1971–72, and the long farewell of May 1975 with Jaguar's production figures are read in full; the race reports from Le Mans, the Nürburgring and the Tourist Trophy are read for their Jaguar paragraphs. Car and Driver's research report on the XK-E, with its test of the car against the 1962 Corvette, gives the American view, with Automotive News's port-of-entry prices of September 1961 and Industrial Design's notice of the car in May 1961. The Autocar's and The Motor's launch tests of March 1961 were not reached; the road tests page says what is known of them.source 1source 8source 9source 10source 2source 11source 12source 13source 14source 15

The factory's records and the Heritage Trust

The Jaguar Heritage Trust holds the factory's records, and its Research Guide to the E-Type's car numbers gives the change points and the first and last cars of each run. Its pages on the cars in its collection, among them 77 RW, on loan to it since 2000, and the last E-Type, its histories of the prototypes E1A and E2A and of the E-Type's development, and its exhibition for the 60th anniversary in 2021 are cited throughout; some of those pages are now offline and are read in the Internet Archive's copies. Jaguar's own brochures of 1968 and 1971 and its releases since 2011, from the continuation Lightweights to Jaguar Classic's cars, give the maker's side. The Museum of Modern Art's exhibition brochure of 1996, Refining the Sports Car: Jaguar's E-Type, adds Christopher Mount's essay, drawn from interviews with two of Jaguar's engineers, Tom Jones and Bob Knight.source 3source 16source 17source 18source 19source 20source 21source 22source 23

Registers, clubs and results

XKEdata, an open register kept by enthusiasts, gives the counts by series, body and steering side and the histories of single cars; it is user-edited, and the pages cite it as such. The Jaguar Clubs of North America's judges' guides give the change points, the Coventry Racers register the competition cars by chassis, and racingsportscars the E-Type's results, race by race. The clubs' own pages, among them the Jaguar E-type Club's, are cited for what they say about themselves.source 5source 24source 6source 7source 25

After the factory

The E-Type's afterlife is told mostly from its makers' own words, and the pages say so: Jaguar's releases for its continuation Lightweights, the E-Type Zero, Reborn and the 60 Collection; the conversion and restomod firms' own pages for their figures; the Challenger owners' club, as reported by Lincolnshire Life, for a well-known replica; and IMCDb's lists of films and television for the car on screen. Its rivals are described from their own makers' pages, Ferrari's and Mercedes-Benz's among them, beside the period magazines.source 26source 27source 28source 29source 30source 31source 32source 33source 34

Owning one today

The buyer's guide and the restoration pages rest on magazine buyer's guides, such as Prestige & Performance Car's sponsored guide of 2026, on the Heritage Trust's own description of its Heritage Certificates, on parts suppliers' accounts of themselves, and on the DVLA's rules and FIVA's definitions where they bear on a car's identity. Repair costs, where a page gives them, are each source's figure in its year.source 35source 36source 37source 38source 39source 40

Later accounts

Later Motor Sport features fill in the competition cars, from the Lightweights (1984) and the Low Drag Coupé (2005) to the Group 44 V12, and its interviews give the people in their own words, Norman Dewis and Dan Gurney among them. Jaguar World's tribute to Malcolm Sayer, of November 2015, is read in the Internet Archive. Paul Skilleter's The Jaguar E-type: A Collector's Guide (1979) and Philip Porter's The Most Famous Car in the World (2002) are cited only from the short passages the Internet Archive's search shows. The American story rests on Chris Cowin's histories of British exports for AROnline, on John Dugdale's Jaguar in America (1993) and on John Gunnell's Standard Catalog of Jaguar (2007), the two books read the same way; Motor Sport's retrospective of April 1989 serves the road cars.source 41source 42source 43source 44source 45source 46source 47source 48source 49source 50
