Jaguar E-Type Race Car

Jaguar never raced the E-Type as a works team. Privateers did, with the factory's help, from 1961 to 1964, and in 1975 a V12 roadster won an American national title. In historic racing it has won the Goodwood Revival's RAC TT Celebration more often than any other model.

On a wet Saturday at Oulton Park, 15 April 1961, Graham Hill drove Equipe Endeavour's ECD 400 to win a 25-lap race for GT cars, 5.6 seconds ahead of Innes Ireland's Aston Martin DB4 GT. The E-Type had been shown to the press at Geneva a month before. Roy Salvadori followed in John Coombs's car, behind the Aston. Twelve days earlier the two cars had been entered at Goodwood and had not arrived, so the E-Type won the first race it started, not the first it was entered for.

That win set the pattern. Jaguar never entered the E-Type as a works team, as it had the C-type and D-type. Privateers raced it, with the factory's help, from 1961 to the end of 1964. Then club racers took over, then a V12 roadster won an American national title in 1975, and in historic racing today it has won the Goodwood Revival's RAC TT Celebration, more often than any other model. The results the site holds, race by race, are at the foot of this page.source 1source 2source 3source 4source 5source 6source 7

E2A and the first season, 1960–61

Before the E-Type was launched, its racing prototype raced. E2A, a fuel-injected car between the D-type and the E-Type, ran for Briggs Cunningham at Le Mans in June 1960 and retired after 89 laps with an engine failure that began with a fuel-injection fault. In America that summer it won at Bridgehampton. The prototypes have their own page.

For the first season Jaguar set aside seven of the first cars for chosen racers: two each for Coombs, Equipe Endeavour and Peter Berry, and one for Sir Gawaine Baillie. Their "Project Specification" gave them gas-flowed heads, higher compression, a close-ratio gearbox (transmission) and a lighter flywheel, on a standard body. They won British GT races, at Oulton Park, Crystal Palace and Snetterton, and lost the big ones to Ferrari's 250 GT SWB. At Spa in May, Mike Parkes finished behind a Ferrari in ECD 400; at the British Empire Trophy and at Brands Hatch in August, Stirling Moss won in a Ferrari. Motor Sport judged in 1984 that the cars had been too heavy for the much lighter Ferraris. The 1961 season is told race by race on its own page.source 8source 9source 10source 11source 3source 1source 12source 13source 14source 5

Le Mans, Sebring and the Tourist Trophy, 1962–64

The E-Type's best result at Le Mans came in 1962, before the special cars: Cunningham and Salvadori's coupé and Sargent and Lumsden's roadster took the first two places in the GT class for cars up to 4 litres, 21 laps behind the winning Ferrari. Le Mans has its own page, from E2A in 1960 to the last two Lightweights in 1964.

For 1963 the factory answered the Ferraris with lighter cars. Malcolm Sayer's one-off Low Drag Coupé, built in 1962, went to Dick Protheroe, who raced it as CUT 7. Jaguar planned eighteen Lightweights and built twelve in 1963–64, with aluminium bodies and aluminium-block engines. Their best results were class wins and British wins: Kjell Qvale's car won its GT class at Sebring in March 1963; Tommy Atkins's car won the class for the largest GT cars in the Tourist Trophy at Goodwood, with Coombs's next, both behind two Ferraris; Hill won four British national races in Coombs's car; and Bob Jane won the Australian GT Championship. No source read records an outright win in a race of the world championship. America, Britain and the Tourist Trophy and Europe each have a page.

The front-line seasons ended in 1964. Protheroe's Low Drag Coupé won its GT class in the Reims 12 Hours and the Paris 1000 km that year. Peter Lindner's Lightweight, rebodied by the factory with a low-drag roof and tail, retired at Le Mans in June, and the car was badly damaged at Montlhéry in October 1964, in the accident in which Lindner died. After that the E-Type became a club racer: racingsportscars lists more E-Type entries in 1965 than in any other year, most of them in British club and national races, and the number fell away after 1966.source 15source 16source 17source 5source 18source 19source 20source 21source 22source 23source 24source 25source 26source 27source 4

The V12 in America, 1974–75

In 1974 Jaguar's importer in America had unsold Series 3 V12s, and Mike Dale of British Leyland Motor Inc proposed racing them. Two roadsters ran in the Sports Car Club of America's B Production class: Group 44's in the east, driven by its founder, Bob Tullius, and Huffaker Engineering's in the west, driven by Lee Mueller. Tullius was regional champion in 1974 and lost the national title at the Runoffs by 0.8 seconds to a Corvette; at Road Atlanta on 2 November 1975 he won it. The Group 44 car ran 17 races and won 12 of them. Group 44 and Huffaker have a page, and the Group 44 car another.

Six-cylinder E-Types raced on in C Production, and in 1980 Freddy Baker won the C Production Runoffs at Road Atlanta in one, for the Gran Turismo Jaguar team.source 6source 28source 29source 30source 31source 32

Rivals on the track

The E-Type's first win came against an Aston Martin DB4 GT and two Ferrari 250 GT SWBs, but over the 1961 season the SWB won every big race the two met in. From 1962 the rival was Ferrari's 250 GTO: GTOs were 2nd and 3rd at Le Mans that year, ahead of both E-Types, and filled the first three places in the 1962 Tourist Trophy. Hill beat Parkes's GTO by 1.4 seconds in Coombs's Lightweight at Goodwood at Easter 1963. From 1963 the AC Cobra took over the big GT class, at Le Mans, where a Cobra beat the Lightweight to the class, and at Bridgehampton. In America in 1974–75 the rival was the Chevrolet Corvette, which had won the B Production title in 14 of the previous 17 years.

The cars outlasted their results: of the twelve Lightweights, Jaguar said in 2014 that eleven survive.source 1source 15source 35source 36source 19source 37source 4source 38source 29source 28source 17
